Bobcats Hire Media Relations & Communications Specialist

by Paul Contreras

Wytheville, VA - The Blue Ridge Bobcats are excited to announce Charles Ryan as the Play-By-Play Broadcaster and Media Relations & Communications Specialist.  Ryan will be in charge of the team’s social media content, hosting the Coach’s show, press releases and written articles for the Bobcats; as well as producing video content.

Before moving to Wytheville, Ryan Graduated from Bowling Green State University with a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Advertising. During his time in BG, he was the voice of the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 Falcon Hockey team on 88.1 WBGU, and was the Production director for the Falcon Media Sports Network where he worked with fellow students to produce sports shows and live game feeds. As well as create radio and social media promotions for the school Broadcasts. Ryan was also the sports Anchor for Bg24, a tv news show at BG during 2022-2023.

“The Blue Ridge Bobcats looked like a perfect opportunity for me to enhance my skills away from and on the mic, while also being in a professional hockey setting,” said Ryan.

Currently with the Blue Ridge Bobcats Ryan will be working with a group of interns to build up the Bobcats broadcast, and help bring hockey to a new area.

“One of the things that I love about hockey and the way that it is broadcast is even if you do not know a lot about hockey you can start to pick it up quickly, and then for me, I get to guide you through the rest of the nuances of the sport,” said Ryan.

Ryan Grew up outside of Chicago IL, before moving to Brighton MI for high school. Making his way through areas with rich hockey history, although he did not fall in love with the sport until later.

“It was not until my senior year of high school when I really started watching sports and then in my freshman year of college I started watching Hockey more than the passive looks that I used to give it and fell in love with the sport,” said Ryan. “Growing up outside of Chicago gave me a chance to listen and watch the Play-By-Play of Pat Foley, who oftentimes showed the fun in the games when he would call. This is something I try to emulate in my different calls each night throwing in a random pun or dad joke here or there to pull in more of my personality to each call,”

Ryan will make his Federal Prospect Hockey League Debut in the Bobcats Home Opener Friday, October 20th at 7:30 p.m.

“I appreciate the opportunity given to me by Barry Soskin and Cristin Miller, to be able to bring Bobcats action to the Wytheville community for their inaugural season and I hope to help bring the Commissioner's Cup to Wytheville,” said Ryan.
